WordPress vs. a Custom Built Website: Which Is Better for a Small Business?

Quick answer

In the WordPress vs custom website debate, neither wins every time. WordPress fits owners who want a huge library of themes and plugins and are willing to keep them updated. A custom built website fits owners who want speed, security and fewer moving parts. The right answer depends on your goals, budget and who will maintain it.

What is the real difference between WordPress and a custom site?

WordPress is a content management system. It's free software that runs on your hosting, and you add a theme for the look and plugins for features like forms, booking and SEO. Most small business WordPress sites are a theme plus a stack of plugins from different developers.

A custom built website is coded for your business specifically. There's no theme to fight with and no plugin stack. The features you need are built in, and the features you don't need simply aren't there.

Both can look great. Both can rank on Google. The difference shows up later, in speed, security, upkeep and how easy it is to make changes.

Which one is cheaper for a small business?

This is usually the first question owners ask me. The honest answer is "it depends on what you count."

WordPress itself is free. But a typical WordPress business site often includes:

  • A premium theme
  • Paid plugins for forms, backups, security, SEO or booking
  • Hosting that can handle WordPress well
  • Someone to run updates and fix things when a plugin update breaks something

A custom site usually has a higher build cost up front because someone is writing it for you. In exchange, there are fewer licenses to renew and fewer parts that need weekly attention.

So compare the total cost over a few years, not just the launch price. A cheap launch with expensive upkeep is not actually cheap.

Which is faster and more secure?

Speed

Speed matters for visitors and for Google. Google measures real visitor experience with Core Web Vitals, which look at how fast the main content loads, how quickly the page responds, and whether things jump around while loading.

WordPress sites can be fast, but every plugin adds code. A site with a heavy theme and a dozen plugins often loads scripts that a given page doesn't even use. A custom site only loads what each page needs, so it's usually lighter from day one.

Security

WordPress is popular, and popular software gets targeted. Most WordPress security problems I see come from outdated plugins or themes, weak logins, or forms with no spam protection. None of that means WordPress is bad. It means WordPress needs steady care.

A custom site has fewer weak spots because there are fewer third party pieces. It still needs secure hosting, secure forms and good passwords. No website is "set it and forget it."

When does WordPress make more sense?

WordPress is a solid choice when:

  • You already have a WordPress site that works well and just needs a refresh
  • You or someone on your team knows WordPress and enjoys managing it
  • You need a very specific feature that already exists as a well supported plugin
  • You have a budget for ongoing maintenance and updates

If that sounds like you, there's no reason to throw it away. A well kept WordPress site can serve a small business for years.

When does a custom built website make more sense?

A custom build tends to fit better when:

  1. You want a fast, clean site without a long plugin list to babysit
  2. Security is a priority and you don't want to rely on many outside developers
  3. You want a blog, local SEO setup, schema and secure forms built in from the start
  4. You'd rather spend your time running your business than updating software

That last one is the big one for most of my clients. They don't want to log in every week to click "update" and hope nothing breaks.

This is the approach I take with my website design service. I build fast, secure sites with a built in blog, local SEO, schema, secure forms and analytics. Then I train you on how to add posts and make simple updates, and you get a clear price before any work starts.

How do I decide for my business?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Who will update the site after launch: you, a team member, or a pro?
  • How often do you want to add content like blog posts or new services?
  • Do you have features that truly need a plugin, like a large online store?
  • What matters more to you: endless options or fewer things to manage?

If you're leaning toward building it yourself on a site builder instead, read whether you should build your own site on Wix or Squarespace first. It's a different question with its own tradeoffs.

Whatever you pick, make sure you own your domain and have access to your hosting. That protects you no matter who builds the site or what platform it runs on.

Let's take this off your plate

Choosing a platform is one more decision on a long list. Most owners don't have the time, don't know how to compare the options, or just don't want to deal with it. I'll look at your business and goals and tell you plainly which route fits, whether you're here in Chandler or anywhere else. Learn more about my website design service or book a free call.

Frequently asked questions

Can a custom built website have a blog?

Yes. Every site I build includes a blog you can post to yourself. A blog helps you answer customer questions and gives Google more useful pages to find.

Can I move from WordPress to a custom site without losing my Google rankings?

You can protect your rankings with careful planning, including redirects from old page addresses to new ones. I walk through the steps in [keeping your rankings during a redesign](https://the-hillary.com/blog/keep-rankings-during-website-redesign).

Is WordPress bad for SEO?

No. WordPress sites can rank well when they're fast, well organized and full of helpful content. SEO depends more on how the site is built and maintained than on the platform name.

Will I be able to edit a custom site myself?

Yes, for everyday changes like blog posts and simple text updates. I train you on how to do it, and bigger changes can always be handed back to me.
