What Are ChatGPT Ads and How Do They Work?
Quick answer
ChatGPT ads are paid placements that OpenAI now runs inside ChatGPT in the US. Advertisers use OpenAI's Ads Manager to set budgets, bids and pacing, upload creative and track performance. You pay by impressions (CPM) or clicks (CPC), and ads stay clearly separate from ChatGPT's answers.
Where did ChatGPT ads come from?
For a long time, ChatGPT had no ads at all. That changed when OpenAI began running ads in ChatGPT in the US. It started with a pilot program with a small group of advertisers. In 2026, OpenAI opened a self serve Ads Manager in beta, and it is rolling out gradually.
So if you have heard about ChatGPT ads but have not seen a way to sign up yet, that is normal. Access is expanding over time, not all at once.
For small business owners, this matters because a lot of people now ask ChatGPT the questions they used to type into Google. A new place where customers spend time usually means a new place to be seen. It also means it is early, and the honest approach is to test carefully.
How do ChatGPT ads work in Ads Manager?
If you have run Google Ads or Meta ads, the setup will feel familiar. Inside OpenAI's Ads Manager, advertisers can:
- Set budgets. You decide how much you are willing to spend.
- Set bids and pacing. You control what you bid and how quickly your budget is spent.
- Upload creative. You provide the ad content.
- Launch campaigns. You turn campaigns on and manage them.
- See performance. You get reporting on how your ads are doing.
How do you pay for ChatGPT ads?
Pricing can be by impressions (CPM, which means cost per thousand times your ad is shown) or by clicks (CPC, which means you pay when someone clicks). What you actually spend depends on the bids and the budget you set. I will not guess at typical costs, because this channel is new and nobody has a reliable benchmark yet. I go deeper on this in how much ChatGPT ads cost.
How is performance measured?
OpenAI offers a conversion pixel and a Conversions API for measurement. In plain terms, these tools help you see when someone who interacted with your ad later took an action on your website, like filling out a form or booking a call.
Advertisers get aggregated reporting. You do not get access to anyone's conversations with ChatGPT. That is an important point for both privacy and expectations: you see results in totals, not individual chats. If tracking is your priority, I wrote a full post on tracking leads from ChatGPT ads.
Do ChatGPT ads change what ChatGPT recommends?
No. OpenAI says ads stay clearly separate from ChatGPT's answers, and paying for ads does not change what ChatGPT recommends in its answers.
This is a big distinction. There are two different ways to show up in ChatGPT:
- Organic visibility. ChatGPT mentions your business in an answer because it understands who you are and thinks you fit the question. You earn that through a clear website, good reviews and helpful content. I cover how in getting ChatGPT to recommend your business.
- Paid ads. You pay to have an ad shown, clearly marked and separate from the answer.
Buying ads will not buy you a recommendation. The two work side by side, and many businesses will want both.
What does a ChatGPT ads campaign look like for a small business?
Since this channel is so new, I treat every ChatGPT campaign as a test. Here is the general approach I take as a ChatGPT ads manager:
- Start with a clear goal. Calls, form fills or booked consultations. One goal per campaign keeps things simple.
- Build a focused landing page. The ad should send people to a page that matches the ad and makes the next step easy, ideally with a free call offer.
- Set up measurement first. Conversion tracking goes in before money goes out, so we know what is working.
- Start with a modest budget. Enough to learn from, not so much that a slow start hurts.
- Watch and adjust. I review results, adjust bids and creative, and report back every week.
A new lead source usually takes 1 to 3 months of testing and tweaking to understand. That is true for any ad platform, and it is especially true for a channel this young. I would rather tell you that up front than promise overnight results.
Who should pay attention to ChatGPT ads right now?
Any business whose customers ask questions before they buy is worth a look. Think service businesses where people research first: accountants, attorneys, mortgage and insurance professionals, home service contractors, and consultants.
That said, ChatGPT ads should not replace channels that already work for you. If your Google Ads or referrals are steady, keep them going and test ChatGPT alongside them. Whether it makes sense for your specific business is a different question, and I answer it in should my small business advertise on ChatGPT.
Let's test ChatGPT ads the smart way
If you don't have time to learn another ad platform, don't know how to set up tracking, or just don't want to babysit a new campaign, I can take it on. I run ChatGPT, Google and Meta ads through my Marketing Manager service, build the landing pages and send you a weekly report. Based in Chandler and working with owners anywhere, I am always willing to take on new AI marketing tools as they come out. Book a free call and let's see if it fits your business.
Frequently asked questions
Can anyone sign up for ChatGPT ads?
OpenAI's self serve Ads Manager is in beta and rolling out gradually in the US. Access is expanding over time, so availability may change.
Does OpenAI share my customers' conversations with advertisers?
No. Advertisers get aggregated reporting and do not get access to people's conversations with ChatGPT.
What is the difference between CPM and CPC?
CPM means you pay for every thousand times your ad is shown. CPC means you pay when someone clicks your ad. ChatGPT ads can be priced either way.
How long before I know if ChatGPT ads work for me?
Plan on 1 to 3 months of testing and tweaking. That gives enough data to see which messages and pages turn clicks into real leads.
